Dear Parent(s):
The upcoming two weeks will be very busy for the 19 students who are involved in the play. Cast members will have rehearsals every afternoon this week, dress rehearsal all day next Monday and performances in the mornings next week. It is essential that ALL STUDENTS complete work assigned in the mornings. We will have 3 to 4 subjects in the morning. During the rehearsals, students will have time to complete work when they are not directly involved in a scene and those students not in the play will have the afternoon to work on assignments.

Writing:
Inanimate object story and letter to Mother Earth

Math:
We will have quizzes each day on the multiplication facts starting Wednesday. There are many strategies or tricks to remember the multiplication facts but they are contingent on knowing basic addition facts. During class we will be working on problem solving, basic division, long division and two and three-digit multiplication.

The Basics:
Any number multiplied by 0 is always 0
Any number multiplied by 1 is the original number
Any number multiplied by 10 is the number plus a 0
Any number multiplied by 2 is a double of the number
Practice counting by 3's to know the 3 times table
Practice counting by 5's to know the 5 times table
Practice your squares 2 x2, 3x3, 4 x 4, 5 x 5, 6 x 6, 7 x 7, 8 x 8, 9 x 9, 10 x 10

Once you know all the facts above with good automaticity, the rest of the times table is easy, providing you have been practising your mental math.

Applying the Basics
The 4 times table is double the 2 times table
The 6 times table is double the 3 times table
The 8 times table is double the 4 times table or doubling the 2 times table twice
The 9 times table can be learned by using your fingers:

The only times table left is 7. You can get the 7 times table not included above by adding on.
You know 6 x 6 is 36 (6 groups of 6)
Then 7 x 6 = 36 + 6 = 42 (7 groups of 6)

You know 6 x 8 = 48 ( 6 groups of 8)
Then 7 x 8 = 48 + 8 = 56 (7 groups of 8)

You know 6 x 9 = 54 (6 groups of 9)
Then 7 x 9 = 54 + 9 = 63 (7 groups of 9)

Grade 5, you must learning a few more facts:
10 x 11 and 10 x 12 (easy using the ten rule)
11 x 11 (double), 11 x 12 and 12 x 12 (double)
Essentially 3 extra facts from last year

Whatever strategy you use, you must learn the times table to 10 x 10 or 12 x 12.
If you do, it will help you apply your skills when problem solving and in other strands of math. You must know your facts to divide and do multi-digit multiplication.

YOU MUST PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Start with the basics to gain confidence, then add a times table each night. Flashcards, games on-line or around the world at the dinner table are all great. Some of you will learn your multiplication facts easily because you have strong mental math skills. For others it will be harder. Research is mixed about the value of "homework" with children under 10. However, reading every evening and knowing the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts have been shown over and over to be of TREMENDOUS value.

Persevere... you can all do it!

Thank you for your support!

Extra Long-Division Practice: (can be done using either strategy)
