Literacy
On Friday in Literacy, we read a humorous, but informative book about how to write story. In "The Plot Chickens", Henrietta's rules for writing a strong story include:
  • An interesting main character
  • Hatching a good plot
  • Giving your main character a problem
  • Developing the plot by asking "What if?"
  • Writing what you know
  • Building suspense (not building a fence!)
  • Making your story come alive by using your five senses
  • The main character solving his/her problem

All next week you will be writing your story during bell work. Some of you have finished the prewriting stop (story map), while most of you will be starting with that step on Monday. Everyday you will be handing in your writing piece and be given feedback the next day. Happy writing!

Math
Grade 4 started reviewing the unit by completing part of the Skills Bank. Grade 5 had a separate lesson on rounding decimals. The same rules apply for rounding decimals as rounding whole numbers. 5 or greater in the place to the right round up, less than 5 round down. Showing why decimals are rounded either up or down on a number line shows your understanding and thinking.

What are these decimals rounding to the nearest tenth? Nearest whole number?
2.09, 0.45, 12.78, 0.62
Note: If you are rounding to the nearest tenth, there should be no digit in the hundredths.
If you are rounding to the nearest whole number, there should be no decimal.

Math test for both grades Thursday, November 19th.

Religion
Father John shared an important message with us during mass on Friday. We are all called to be saints. What three things do saints do that we are called to do every day?
Social Studies
Please continue to work on your Mindomo mind map. The instructions to access Desire to Learn on the Board website are in the last post. Add pictures to your map of specific people in local departments or images that are related to a service that the department provides to the citizens of London.
